The Connected Car Landscape
Connected vehicles and autonomous driving are like two parallel roads that will, eventually, converge. That said, it is imperative to understand that connected vehicles are not the same as automated vehicles nor are either the same as autonomous driving.
The term connected vehicle applies to vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technologies that use either DSRC or C-V2X to exchange information (basic safety messages) and then warn a vehicle’s human driver about an impending danger. An automated vehicle, however, is one in which some of the driving tasks have been automated. Connected vehicles and autonomous driving converge around safety.
This white paper discusses V2X, autonomous driving, the communication technologies that enable V2X, the benefits of V2X and autonomous driving, as well as the regulatory landscape around V2X.
